Description
Impact Hammer – A Key Tool in Modern Construction and Engineering
The impact hammer is a versatile tool used extensively in construction, civil engineering, and other industries that require precise, forceful impacts. Its applications range from driving piles into the ground to testing the durability of materials. A critical piece of equipment, the impact hammer provides the necessary force to execute tasks that require consistent impact strength, making it an indispensable tool in the industry. At Capco, we understand the importance of using high-quality, reliable equipment, and our impact hammers are designed to meet the demands of professionals in various fields.
Used for the non-destructive testing of hardened concrete in order to determine the strength in various parts of a structure. During operation the plunger is pressed against the surface of the concrete. This action compresses a spring which automatically releases a percussion weight striking against the plunger, and onto the surface of the concrete. This impact causes a rebound effect which is proportional to the strength of the concrete. A pointer on the scale indicates the maximum rebound point of of the percussion weight. This number is referred to the calibration curve chart on the hammer and shows the compressive strength in relation to the impact value. The test hammer is supplied complete with plastic carrying case, grinding stone and instruction manual.
Applications of the Impact Hammer
The versatility of the impact hammer means it finds use in a wide range of industries:
-
Pile Driving: The most common use of an impact hammer is in pile driving, where large piles are driven deep into the ground to provide foundation support for buildings, bridges, and other structures. The impact hammer applies repeated strikes to the pile, driving it into the soil with high force and accuracy.
-
Material Testing: The impact hammer is also used in materials testing, such as determining the strength and durability of concrete, steel, or other construction materials. This is often done using the Schmidt hammer method, which measures the rebound of the hammer after striking the material’s surface. This test helps engineers assess the quality of construction materials before they are used in major projects.
-
Demolition: Impact hammers can also serve as a part of demolition equipment, breaking down structures or materials by delivering rapid, concentrated impacts. This is particularly helpful in selective demolition where precision is necessary to avoid damaging other parts of the structure.
-
Soil Compaction: In certain cases, the impact hammer is used for soil compaction, ensuring that the foundation of the soil beneath a structure is solid and stable. The hammer helps compact the soil quickly, making it suitable for construction.

Maintenance Tips for Impact Hammers
To ensure your impact hammer remains in top condition and performs optimally throughout its lifecycle, proper maintenance is essential. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
-
Regular Inspections: Inspect your hammer regularly for any signs of wear or damage, especially to the components that endure the most stress, such as the impact mechanism and the hammer body.
-
Lubrication: Keep all moving parts properly lubricated to prevent unnecessary friction and wear. This will extend the lifespan of your hammer and maintain its efficiency.
-
Proper Storage: When not in use, store your impact hammer in a dry, cool place to prevent rust and corrosion. Ensure that it is safely secured to avoid any accidents during storage.
-
Timely Repairs: If you notice any performance issues, address them promptly to avoid further damage. Small problems, when left unchecked, can lead to costly repairs or replacement.
By following these tips, you’ll ensure that your impact hammer continues to perform reliably, saving you time and money in the long run.
The impact hammer is an essential tool for many construction, engineering, and material testing tasks, providing the power and precision needed to complete projects successfully.
